Batting Helmets in Slow Pitch

Also known as: helmets in slow pitch, do adults wear helmets in slow pitch, slow pitch batting helmet, helmet rule slow pitch, bat donut in slow pitch, on-deck donut slow pitch

Definition

Adults usually do not have to wear batting helmets in slow pitch. USA Softball requires them for all youth players and in adult fast pitch, but not for adult slow pitch. Any player may still wear a helmet or face guard at any time, and USA Softball recommends helmets for runners. Your league can add its own helmet rule.

USA Softball's helmet rule lists who must wear one on offense. That list covers adult fast pitch, modified pitch and all Junior Olympic players, including the on-deck batter. Adult slow pitch is not on it.

The rules also give every player the right to more protection. Any offensive or defensive player may wear a helmet or a face mask at any time. USA Softball's safety guide recommends helmets for base runners, since their backs are often turned to throws.

Rules can be stricter locally. USA Softball notes that leagues outside its championship play may change its rules. Check your league's sheet before your first game.

On deck, USA Softball lets you loosen up with up to two official bats or an approved warm-up bat. Any attachment, such as a donut weight, must be approved. Bat sting is a different issue. It usually means contact off the end of the barrel or near the hands.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Ask your league if helmets are required. If not, consider one for running the bases anyway.

Advanced note

If you wear a helmet with a face guard, make sure the guard is approved for that helmet model.

Example

A coed league adds a rule that every runner must wear a helmet. A few players grumble at first. Then a throw from shortstop hits a helmeted runner in the head, and no one complains again.

Why it matters

Knowing the helmet rules lets you choose protection on purpose instead of by habit. It also keeps you legal in leagues with their own rules.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a youth helmet rule applies to adult leagues, or the reverse
  • Wearing a cracked or dented helmet
  • Using an unapproved weight on deck in a sanctioned game
  • Ignoring a league's local helmet rule

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to wear a helmet in adult slow pitch?

Not under USA Softball rules, which require helmets for youth players and adult fast pitch only. Any player may still choose to wear one, and local leagues can require it.

Can I use a bat donut on deck in slow pitch?

Only an approved one in USA Softball play. Its rules allow up to two official bats or an approved warm-up bat, and any attachment must be approved.

Why does my hand sting when I hit a softball?

Sting usually means you hit the ball off the end of the barrel or near your hands. Batting gloves can soften it, but squaring up the sweet spot is the real fix.
