ATP Rankings and Grand Slams

Also known as: ATP ranking points, how ATP rankings work, ATP rankings, ranking points in tennis, grand slam points, grand slams in tennis, masters 1000 points, pro tennis rankings

Definition

ATP ranking points are earned by how far you go in each tournament, and bigger events give more points. In the 2026 table, a Grand Slam title is worth 2000 points, a Masters 1000 title 1000, an ATP 500 title 500 and an ATP 250 title 250. A player's ranking adds up their best 18 results, plus the ATP Finals for those who qualify.

The ATP Rankings rank men's pro players. The ATP uses them to decide entry and seeding at its tournaments. Players earn points for each round they reach, and the totals decide the ranking.

Events sit in tiers. The four Grand Slams pay the most: 2000 points to the champion. The Masters 1000 events pay 1000 to the winner, ATP 500 events 500 and ATP 250 events 250. Challenger events pay less, from 175 down to 50 for a title.

The ranking counts a player's best 18 results. For top players, that is the four Grand Slams, the eight automatic-entry Masters 1000s and six other best results. The year-end ATP Finals counts as an extra event for those who qualify. An unbeaten champion there earns 1500 points.

The four Grand Slams are the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. Women's pro tennis has its own WTA Rankings with its own points table.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

When you watch a pro event, check its tier. It tells you how many points are at stake.

Advanced note

Look at a player's best-18 breakdown to see which results their ranking depends on most.

Example

A player wins an ATP 250 title for 250 points, then reaches a Grand Slam semifinal. The deeper run at the bigger event adds far more to his ranking.

Why it matters

Rankings decide who gets into which tournaments and who is seeded. Knowing how points work explains why players choose certain events.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking every match win is worth the same points
  • Adding up all of a player's results instead of their best 18
  • Applying the ATP points table to women's rankings
