Converting an NTRP Rating to UTR

Also known as: NTRP to UTR, UTR to NTRP, convert NTRP to UTR, NTRP UTR conversion, UTR equivalent of NTRP, NTRP equivalent UTR, compare NTRP and UTR

Definition

There is no official chart that turns an NTRP level like 4.0 into a UTR number. The two systems measure in different ways. NTRP is a USTA level from 1.5 to 7.0, while UTR runs from 1.00 to 16.50 and is calculated from your recent match results. To find your UTR, play matches that report to UTR and check your profile.

NTRP and UTR answer different questions. NTRP is the USTA's adult rating, from 1.5 to 7.0 in half-point steps. It is a broad level, published at the end of the year. It only counts results from USTA League and USTA NTRP adult events.

UTR is a single number from 1.00 to 16.50, shown with two decimals. Its algorithm uses your last 30 eligible matches from the past 12 months. It updates daily and pulls results from many sources. It rates players of all ages and genders on one scale.

Because the inputs differ, two players with the same NTRP can have quite different UTRs. Charts you find online that match NTRP levels to UTR numbers are rough guides, not official tables. UTR itself notes that NTRP gives only a general mark of ability.

The reliable way to know your UTR is to get one. Create a profile and play events or matches that report results to UTR. After a few matches, your rating reflects your real results.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

If an event asks for a UTR and you don't have one, ask the organiser how they place unrated players.

Advanced note

Play a few matches that report to UTR before you need the number for a tournament or college coach. A rating built on several results is more stable.

Example

Two friends are both NTRP 4.0. One plays lots of junior and open events and has a UTR near the top of their league. The other only plays league doubles and has a much lower UTR.

Why it matters

Mixing up the scales can put you in the wrong event or give a coach the wrong picture. Knowing there is no fixed conversion saves you from relying on guesswork.

Common mistakes

  • Treating an online conversion chart as official
  • Entering a UTR-based event using a guessed number
  • Expecting your UTR to match a friend's because you share an NTRP level

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official NTRP to UTR conversion chart?

No. There is no official conversion. NTRP and UTR use different scales and different results, so the only reliable way to know is to play matches that report to UTR.

Is NTRP or UTR more accurate?

They measure different things. NTRP is a broad USTA level updated yearly, while UTR is a two-decimal rating recalculated often from recent results across many events.
