Also known as: I-फॉर्मेशन, सर्वर-एट-नेट फॉर्मेशन

Definition

Beginner tip

Commit to advancing immediately after hitting the third shot — do not wait to see where it lands before moving, because the hesitation creates up-and-back.

Advanced note

If your third shot is clearly poor and you know the return will be attacked, stop your advance and hold the transition zone rather than rushing to the kitchen into a ball aimed at your feet.

Example

How it shows up on video

SwingVantage tracks the position of both partners at the moment of each contact during rallies, flagging instances where one partner is at the kitchen line. At the same time, the other is more than six feet behind. This means the signature of unintended up-and-back.

Common mistakes

  • Hesitating on the third-shot advance because the drop felt uncertain, creating accidental up-and-back
  • Intentionally using up-and-back without communicating with the partner, who assumes side-by-side coverage
  • Staying in up-and-back too long rather than using the first neutral exchange to complete the advance
  • Using up-and-back defensively when the correct response is to reset to full baseline rather than holding an awkward split position

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab tracks court-depth positions of both players across each rally frame, identifying up-and-back instances and their durations to reveal how quickly teams resolve split-formation vulnerabilities.
