インサイドピッチへの対応とは、プレートの内側3分の1に来た球を打つ技術であり、手を体に引き寄せ、早めにバレルを通し、引っ張り方向へ強く打ち返すものである。
内角球はプレートより前で捉えなければならない。バレルを遅らせて出すと窮屈になってしまうためである。打者は手を体の近くに保ち(「ボールの内側にとどまる」)、スイング軌道の早い段階でコンタクトゾーンを回転させて通す必要がある。手を体から離してキャストしたり、ゾーンの奥まで引きつけすぎたりすると、詰まった当たりになる。強いインサイドピッチへの対応があれば、打者はストライクを引っ張ってギャップに運び、内角を攻めてくる投手を痛めつけることができる。
Practice inside-pitch tee work with the tee set at the front corner of the plate and focus on keeping your hands close to your body all the way through the contact point.
Use high-speed video to confirm your contact point on inside pitches is at least 6–8 inches in front of the plate. This means any deeper and you're arriving too late to generate pull-side power.

How it shows up on video
A proper inside-pitch contact will show the hands driving in close to the body with bent elbows through impact. The ball will be met clearly in front of the plate. Hitters who get jammed will show contact near the handle with the hands caught extended or away from the body. High-speed video at the contact frame will confirm whether the barrel was through the zone early enough to catch the inside pitch with the sweet spot.
Common mistakes
- Extending the hands outward (casting) before the barrel is through the zone, causing the bat to arrive late and produce jammed contact near the handle
- Pulling the front shoulder out of the zone early, steering the barrel away from the inside pitch and reducing power to the pull side
- Confusing an inside pitch with a ball and taking it for a called strike by failing to recognize it early enough in the zone
- Trying to drive an inside pitch to the opposite field, which requires the barrel to arrive even later and produces nothing but weak contact
