Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

On your second serve, commit completely to a spin serve — hit it with the same aggression as your first serve but directed upward, not through the ball.

Advanced note

Deliberately practice serving at match pressure by playing practice sets with a rule that double faults cost an extra point. The artificial pressure builds the mental commitment to swing fully on the second serve.

Example

Why it matters

Double faults are unforced free points against you. Motion Lab reads your serve mechanics but does not track faults, so note when they cluster and compare those serves on video.

How it shows up on video

On video, compare your second-serve mechanics to your first-serve mechanics, looking for swing-speed reduction, toss drift, or signs of grip tension. A double-fault cluster often shows up as a collapsed trophy position on the second serve and a ball that floats without spin — the mechanical signature of a fear-driven push.

Common mistakes

  • Reducing racquet-head speed on the second serve out of fear, which removes both spin and margin at the same time
  • Drifting the toss toward the body on the second serve instead of placing it in the kick-serve window slightly behind the head
  • Taking the same risk level on the second serve as the first, treating both deliveries as equal-margin attempts
  • Not using a kick or heavy-spin second serve, relying instead on a slower version of the flat serve that has even less margin

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab reads your serve mechanics, but it does not track faults, scores, or pressure situations. Note when your double faults cluster, then compare those serves on video to spot pressure-triggered patterns.

Frequently asked questions
