Also known as: S&V,

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Try serve-and-volley behind wide slice serves only. The returner is stretched wide and has the toughest angle for a passing shot. This gives you the most forgiving conditions.

Advanced note

Vary serve-and-volley with an occasional stay-back point on the same serve pattern — once the returner starts chipping short expecting your net rush, the short ball becomes an easy forehand winner from the baseline.

Example

Why it matters

Serve-and-volley shortens rallies and puts returners under time pressure. Motion Lab does not track serve placement, so check on video whether your serves set up the approach before you commit to the tactic.

How it shows up on video

Look for forward momentum in the serve follow-through transitioning directly into the approach sprint. On video, check that your split step is timed to the opponent's contact and that you volley from inside the service line. Errors appear as the player stopping at the baseline after serving, not splitting, or arriving at the net too slowly and hitting a defensive volley from the service line instead of an offensive position.

Common mistakes

  • Pausing at the baseline after the serve instead of immediately sprinting forward, arriving too deep for an effective first volley
  • Not splitting before the opponent makes contact, arriving at the net stationary and unable to react to passing angles
  • Using serve-and-volley behind a weak serve that gives the returner too much time and too many angles to work with
  • Approaching on the second serve without the spin quality to limit the returner, turning a risk into an almost certain passing opportunity

Motion Lab does not track your court position or distance from the net. Check on video where you make first-volley contact: from an effective closing depth or from too far back in the court.

Frequently asked questions
