Definition

Beginner tip

After hitting an approach shot, sprint forward immediately and stop only when you hear the opponent making contact. This means the split step happens at that sound, not before.

Advanced note

Stagger your net position based on where your approach shot landed. This means if you hit to the backhand corner, position slightly toward the line side to preempt the down-the-line pass, the most dangerous counter.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

SwingVantage tracks whether the player is moving forward through the approach shot and arrives at the net zone within the expected timeframe after contact. Errors show up as the player stopping behind the service line (too deep), failure to execute a split step before the opponent swings, or standing flat-footed in an upright posture rather than athletic bend-knee ready position.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping at the service line instead of closing to within 2 metres of the net, leaving wide angles open for the passing shot
  • Forgetting to split step as the opponent swings, arriving at the net stationary and unable to react directionally
  • Approaching off a ball that is too deep or too powerful, giving the opponent an easy wide angle to pass
  • Closing too close to the net, making a lob unreachable and forcing the opponent's passing shot to a predictable low target

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage measures the distance from the net at which the player arrives for volleys and correlates it with passing-shot success rates to quantify the optimal closing depth for each player's speed profile.

Across sports

Pickleball
Approaching the net in pickleball culminates at the non-volley zone line — this is the standard finishing position, not a choice.
Padel
In padel both partners approach and hold the net as a team; net dominance is the central tactical principle.

Frequently asked questions
