Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Point your non-racquet hand at the ball as you track it. This natural pointing reflex keeps your shoulders turned and your body organized under the ball.

Advanced note

Aim overheads at the opponent's feet or to the corner rather than going for the ultimate pace. A well-placed, controlled overhead at 80% force wins the point more reliably than a full-speed smash that clips the line.

Example

Why it matters

A hesitant overhead is a wasted opportunity. Motion Lab estimates your swing path and shoulder turn; it does not see the lob, so check your positioning on video.

How it shows up on video

On video, check for the non-racquet arm pointing upward to track the ball and contact at full arm extension at the highest reachable point. Check too that your shoulder turn starts early, right after you read the lob. Errors show up as jumping forward prematurely (causing the ball to fall behind), an abbreviated swing arc that misses pronation, or a late shoulder turn that leaves the player sideways to the ball at contact.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping toward the ball too early instead of repositioning footwork underneath it, causing an off-balance contact
  • Letting the ball drop too far behind the body before swinging, resulting in a ball contacted behind the shoulder that nets
  • Failing to turn the shoulders early after reading the lob, arriving at contact without a loaded swing
  • Swinging with a chopping downward motion instead of a full pronating serve arc, reducing pace and angle

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab reads your shoulder turn and elbow angle on the overhead. This shows whether your arm is extended. But not your contact height against your reach. Motion Lab does not track pronation. Check on video that it completes, since that separates a full smash from a chop.

Across sports

Pickleball
In pickleball overheads must clear a lower net with less pace; placement and angle matter more than raw power.
Padel
Padel overheads are often aimed at the side or back wall rather than attempting outright winners, as wall play offers creative redirections.

Frequently asked questions
