Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Use a simple three-rule decision: if the ball lands deep and you are at the baseline, keep it crosscourt. If the ball is short and mid-court, attack. If you are stretched and defensive, go high and deep.

Advanced note

Track your own patterns. Keep a simple tally of points won when you stay crosscourt versus points won when you attack early. Your own numbers then show how patient you need to be.

Example

Why it matters

Most recreational errors are shot-selection errors, not stroke errors. Motion Lab reads your strokes, not the score or your misses, so review your decisions from match video.

How it shows up on video

On video, compare ball height, court position, and opponent location at contact with the shot you chose, to catch high-risk choices in low-opportunity positions. A player who goes for a down-the-line winner from behind the baseline on a deep, fast ball shows an obvious shot-selection error. Video makes it easy to spot.

Common mistakes

  • Attempting high-risk winners from deep or defensively stretched positions when a high-percentage neutral ball would maintain the point
  • Going crosscourt every shot out of habit rather than reading the tactical opportunity to change direction
  • Choosing the first attacking opportunity regardless of ball quality — attacking a deep, fast ball demands near-perfect execution
  • Ignoring score context and taking the same risk at 0-40 as at 30-40, instead of adjusting risk tolerance to the score

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab reads your stroke mechanics, but not your contact height, court position or errors. Note on video which positions and ball heights produce your most unforced errors.

Across sports

Pickleball
In pickleball shot selection is constrained by the kitchen rule — speed-ups from the kitchen are lower percentage than resets. The right shot is often the duller one.
Padel
Padel shot selection must account for wall availability — sometimes aiming at the wall deliberately is the correct shot rather than going for a direct winner.

Frequently asked questions
