Also known as: DTL,

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Pick a specific target on the down-the-line side of the court before the shot starts, then focus on contacting the ball slightly later (further behind the ideal forehand contact point) to naturally redirect the ball along the line.

Advanced note

Disguise your down-the-line by holding the shoulder rotation longer than usual. The longer you delay the shoulder turn, the later the opponent reads the direction change.

Example

Why it matters

Knowing when to go down the line separates tactical players from pattern players. Motion Lab estimates your swing direction and whether contact is late. But it does not see where the ball goes. As a result, check your misses on video.

How it shows up on video

On video, check the racquet face and the direction the ball leaves the strings relative to the sideline. Errors show up as the face opening toward the crosscourt target mid-swing, or the swing path drifting outward rather than staying on line, both producing a ball that leaks wide or mid-court.

Common mistakes

  • Telegraphing the down-the-line early by rotating the shoulders toward the sideline during the backswing
  • Opening the racquet face through contact, sending the ball wide of the sideline rather than along it
  • Attempting the down-the-line from a defensive position with insufficient time to change direction cleanly
  • Failing to adjust footwork for the changed swing path, producing a body-jammed contact

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab estimates your swing-path direction and whether your contact is late. Both can cause a down-the-line miss. It does not measure racquet-face angle, so pause your video at contact to check the face.
