Also known as: 앵글 오브 어택, AoA
Tips by skill level
For iron shots: place the ball in the center of your stance and focus on "hitting the ball before the ground." The divot starting just past the ball confirms a proper descending blow. For the driver: move the ball to your lead heel and tilt your spine slightly away from the target — these two setup changes naturally promote hitting up on the ball.
Use the "smash factor × spin loft" relationship to optimize AoA. For drivers, the ideal combination is about +3° to +4° AoA with a face angle near 0° and a dynamic loft of 12°–14°. This combination maximizes ball speed at a favorable spin rate of 2,200–2,600 rpm for most swing speeds. Straying significantly outside this window — either too descending or too ascending — costs distance.
Why it matters
Attack angle is one of the most actionable numbers in golf because it is directly changed by setup adjustments (ball position, spine tilt) without requiring swing changes. The number comes from a launch monitor, and SwingVantage checks imported sessions for a steep attack angle or a driver hit downward.
How it shows up on video
Attack angle is best observed from a face-on or down-the-line camera angle. Signs of a negative attack angle on irons: divot starts at or just past the ball, ball launches on a penetrating trajectory. Signs of too steep an attack angle: large, deep divot; high, weak iron shots; fat miss. For the driver, a very early weight shift and a "leveled off" or rising shoulder line through impact suggest a positive AoA. Motion Lab does not estimate attack angle, so read these cues on your own clip.
Common mistakes
- Trying to hit up on irons — the descending blow on irons is what compresses the ball and creates distance and control. Scooping the ball (trying to lift it) produces thin or skulled shots.
- Hitting down on the driver — the most common driver mistake among recreational golfers. A negative AoA on the driver reduces launch and adds spin, costing significant distance.
- Over-adjusting ball position — moving the driver ball too far forward can over-correct attack angle into an excessively positive number (+6° or more). This can reduce smash factor.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not read attack angle, so it cannot say whether you hit up or down on the ball. Visual Proof shows your shoulder tilt at P1 address and P7 impact, but that is a body position, not a club reading. A launch monitor measures attack angle; imported sessions are checked for a steep attack and for a driver hit downward.

Frequently asked questions
