Hoge-handenopstelling

Also known as: handen omhoog, handpositie bij het laden

Definition

Beginner tip

Before each pitch in batting practice, consciously set your hands above your back shoulder and feel the position. This means then focus on keeping them at that height through your stride, rather than letting the stride pull them down.

Advanced note

Work on your high-hand position in particular during tee work at different heights. This means upper-third, middle, and lower-third. This means and verify that your barrel delivery angle is consistent across all three tee heights. This confirms that your load position is truly supporting an adaptable barrel path.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, hand height at load is measured relative to the back shoulder. This means hands above the shoulder indicate a good load position. Hands at or below the shoulder indicate a position that will force compensatory barrel movements. Common errors include hands dropping during the load phase (often triggered by early shoulder turn or weight shift that pulls the hands down), elbows rising above the hands (creating a stiff, barred-out load position that restricts barrel path flexibility), and hands positioned. As a result, far behind the body that they cannot fire directly toward the contact zone without first looping forward.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing the hands to drop during the load phase when the stride triggers a weight shift that pulls the upper body down and forward, eliminating the high-hand advantage before the swing even begins
  • Setting the hands high but allowing the back elbow to rise above the hands (the "chicken wing" position). This locks the shoulder and prevents the barrel from delivering at a flat angle despite the correct hand height
  • Confusing high hands with rigid hands. This means tension in the forearms and hands at the load position reduces bat speed more than any hand-height problem. This is because it prevents the relaxed whip needed for fast barrel delivery
  • Moving directly to high-hand drills without addressing a low-hands problem's root cause (often an early shoulder turn or a drop-step stride that pulls everything down). This means the high-hand position will not hold up under game swing intensity

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage measures hand height relative to the back shoulder at the load position on every rep and tracks whether this height is maintained through the stride and into the launch position. Hitters whose hands drift downward between load and launch receive a load-collapse alert, as this indicates the stride or weight shift is systematically undermining the intended hand position before the swing initiates.
