Definition

Beginner tip

Use the "hold the finish for three seconds" practice rule. This means after every shot in practice, hold your finish position completely still for a count of three. If you cannot hold it without wobbling or repositioning, you were not balanced or fully transferred at the finish. This instant feedback trains the balance and weight transfer that a complete follow-through requires.

Advanced note

Compare your finish position at different swing speeds. This means at 60%, 80%, and 100% effort, the follow-through position should be essentially identical. This means balanced, high, and fully rotated. If the finish degrades by a lot at 100% effort (shorter, more collapsed, less balanced), you are swinging beyond your current ability to maintain the swing pattern, and working at 80–85% effort produces better results and faster development than swinging "all out."

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, a complete follow-through is visible as the club wrapping around to the trail shoulder with the golfer balanced on the lead foot, belt buckle facing the target. The trail foot balanced on its toes with minimal weight remaining. An incomplete follow-through shows the club stopping short (indicating deceleration), the body leaning backward (indicating incomplete weight transfer), or the arms collapsing toward the body rather than completing the arc. From a down-the-line angle, a complete follow-through shows the shaft across the back of the shoulders (for a full swing) and the body fully rotated through to face the target.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to guide shots by abbreviating the follow-through. This means any attempt to "steer" the ball in flight by stopping the swing at impact changes the forces at impact itself. Commit to a full follow-through and let the swing produce the result.
  • Confusing an early-stopping follow-through with deceleration — while related, an early follow-through can result from deceleration before impact or from a follow-through restriction. Video slow-motion at impact can distinguish between the two, since deceleration shows the club slowing before the ball. At the same time, restriction shows normal speed at impact but an artificial halt afterward.
  • Over-swinging to produce a "bigger" follow-through — a longer, higher follow-through is the result of acceleration and rotation, not a goal to manufacture. Swinging harder without the underlying mechanics does not produce a better follow-through; it produces a more off-balance, uncontrolled finish.
  • Using the follow-through as the only diagnostic checkpoint — the follow-through is a result of what happened in the downswing. Observing the follow-through tells you about the downswing quality. But changing only the follow-through position without addressing the downswing that produces it changes nothing about the shot.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage evaluates the follow-through from face-on video as a completion indicator for multiple swing qualities. This means checking whether the finish is balanced (indicating weight transfer), complete (indicating full acceleration), and fully rotated (indicating hip clearance and rotation). The system flags incomplete or off-balance follow-through positions as indicators of upstream swing qualities that should be examined, with confidence labels based on the clarity of the full-body position in available video.
