Laagste punt
Also known as: onderkant van de boog
Place a tee in the ground 3 inches ahead of your ball and practice hitting the ball AND the tee with the same swing. If you reliably clip the tee, your low point is in the right place. If you miss the tee or hit the ground before the ball, your low point is too far back. This tangible target for the divot is the simplest low-point training drill.
Monitor your low-point location across different lies and clubs with the "spray test". This means apply dry shampoo or foot powder to the clubface and look at where the turf-grass transfer mark appears relative to the center. Also mark the ground where the ball was with a tee hole and check divot start position. A consistent 2–4 inch forward divot indicates optimal low-point control. Anything behind the tee hole indicates a low-point issue, regardless of how the shot felt.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, low point can be estimated by watching the divot location relative to where the ball was. From down-the-line, the lead hip height and lateral shift through impact are reliable low-point indicators. This means a lead hip that stays over the trail foot (stall pattern) corresponds to a low point behind the ball. A lead hip that clears aggressively corresponds to a forward low point. Slow-motion video clearly shows whether turf contact begins before or after the ball.
Common mistakes
- Moving the ball too far back to fix fat shots. This means. At the same time, moving the ball back does place it before the low point, it also forces a steeper attack angle and adds dynamic loft. This produces high-spinning, left-curving shots. A better fix is shifting the low point forward (weight shift, lead wrist) rather than moving the ball backward.
- Scooping to help the ball into the air. This means trying to lift the ball by releasing the hands early moves low point by a lot back, guaranteeing a fat or thin result. Trust the loft to get the ball up.
- Ignoring the relationship between low point and driver distance. This means for a driver, the low point should fall before the ball. As a result, the club is ascending at contact (+AoA). Playing the ball in the center of the stance with a driver puts the low point well ahead of the ball, guaranteeing a descending strike that costs launch angle and adds spin.
- Fixing low point without addressing its cause. This means if the low point is reliably behind the ball, there is a reason. This means insufficient weight shift, early extension, or a physical limitation. Treating the symptom (moving the ball back) rather than the cause (weight shift pattern) produces a temporary fix that breaks down under pressure.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can observe low-point indicators from video. This means especially hip lateral shift, lead wrist position at impact, and divot location from the camera frame. This means to identify whether a fat or thin pattern stems from a weight-shift issue, a wrist-position issue, or a ball-position error.
Frequently asked questions
