Achatamento (shallowing)

Also known as: caindo no slot, deitando a haste

Definition

Beginner tip

Keep the trail elbow close to your hip as the downswing starts. If it drops rather than pushing out, the club flattens on its own with no arm manipulation at all.

Advanced note

Work on feeling the club fall at transition: pause at the top, let gravity pull it down before the hips begin rotating. That passive-upper, active-lower combination is the mechanism behind the position in elite players.

Example

How it shows up on video

From down the line, watch the shaft move from a steep angle at the top to a flatter one as the hands drop toward hip height. The club will appear to "fall under" or "drop behind" the original backswing plane. From face on, the trail elbow should drop close to the hip early rather than pushing outward. This means the clearest indicator of the lower-body-led transition underneath it.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing the club flat with the trail hand, which often overshoots into a wildly inside path or a stuck feeling through impact.
  • Confusing this with laying the club flat at the top, which is a different thing entirely. The change happens during transition, not by starting there.
  • Flattening the shaft without matching the clubface, which produces a large push-slice. Face control has to be maintained as it flattens.
  • Assuming everyone needs more of it — a player already too far inside will produce snap hooks by going further. Shallowing is a fix for steep, over-the-top players, not a universal goal.

SwingVantage analyses shaft-angle progression through the early downswing from down-the-line video. Because accurate measurement depends on camera position, these observations carry a confidence level reflecting video quality and angle.
