Exit velocity is not visible on video alone — you need a sensor or monitor to measure it. What video shows are the mechanics that drive it. This means how far the hips rotate before the hands move, whether the barrel stays on plane through contact, and whether the hands collapse before the ball leaves the bat. A high-EV swing looks balanced and sequential; a low-EV swing often shows the arms working before the hips or the barrel dragging behind the hands.
Common mistakes
- Confusing bat speed with EV — they are related but not identical. Barrel contact quality mediates the relationship.
- Chasing peak EV numbers from a single session rather than tracking median EV across many swings, which is a more stable and predictive measure.
- Assuming more effort produces more EV. Over-swinging typically produces less EV because the body loses its mechanical sequence under tension.
- Comparing EV numbers across different measurement devices without acknowledging the methodological differences that make direct comparisons unreliable.
