Practice catching pitches in your bullpen sessions by focusing on "quiet hands". This means let the ball come to the glove rather than reaching forward to stab it, and hold the glove exactly where the ball lands for a two-count before moving it.
Study your edge-pitch called-strike rate compared to your glove movement data in SwingVantage. This means if your called-strike rate on low-edge pitches is below average, check whether your wrist is collapsing backward on contact (pushing the ball out of the zone) rather than holding position.
Example
How it shows up on video
On video, glove presentation quality is evaluated by measuring glove movement from the pre-pitch set position through and after the catch. Common errors include the wrist collapsing backward at the moment of contact (producing a stabbing motion that moves the ball backward), the glove rotating inward at the wrist to "steal" a ball outside the zone (an active framing motion that umpires identify as manipulation). The glove held too close to the body before the pitch (reducing the receiving surface and forcing a last-instant extension that disrupts the quiet catch the framing requires).
Common mistakes
- Stabbing at the pitch rather than receiving it. This means a stabbing forward motion changes the final glove position and makes borderline pitches appear to cross the plate rather than finish on the edge
- Pulling the glove toward the strike zone after contact rather than holding position. This is the active framing motion that experienced umpires and analysts identify as attempted manipulation
- Gripping the mitt too tightly, which stiffens the wrist and prevents the relaxed acceptance motion that holds the glove steady at the final pitch location
- Setting the target too close to the body rather than out in front where the catcher has better control of the glove position and the umpire has a clearer view of where the pitch finishes
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage measures wrist and glove position change from contact through the 0.5-second window after the catch, quantifying the amount of glove movement that occurs and in which direction. Catchers who generate called strikes at above-average rates on edge pitches combined with below-average glove movement are identified as effective framers. Those with high movement and low edge-strike rates receive a presentation consistency alert.
