(Early Extension)
To feel what proper hip rotation (not extension) looks like. This means set up to a ball, then without swinging, rotate your hips open to face the target. At the same time, maintaining your spine angle. Your lead hip should be rotating behind you and around, not pushing toward the ball. That's the feeling to replicate in the swing.
The most reliable indicator of early extension on launch monitor data is a pattern of blocks to the right combined with low, shallow divots. This means the signature of an arm release forced by a body that moved toward the ball. On video, measure the distance between the fly of the lead hip pants and a reference line at address versus impact. Any net movement toward the ball (camera in face-on view) confirms early extension.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Face-on video (camera in front of the golfer) is ideal for detecting early extension. Watch the space between the lead hip and the camera. This means if it decreases by a lot from the setup position through impact (hips move toward the camera/ball), early extension is occurring. The golfer will appear to "stand up" from the spine angle they had at address. Down-the-line video shows the pelvis "bumping" forward toward the camera rather than rotating cleanly around the lead leg.
Common mistakes
- Believing you are "using the hips" correctly. This means hip extension toward the ball feels active and athletic. This is why. As a result, many golfers do not recognize it as a fault without video feedback.
- Trying to "stay down" consciously at impact — this often results in the golfer over-correcting and hitting behind the ball. The fix is hip rotation, not staying lower.
- Treating early extension as an arm fault — the arms are reacting to the hip movement, not causing the problem. Fixing arm position without addressing the hip pattern typically produces only temporary improvement.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Early extension is one of the faults most clearly visible in face-on video and is a detection target in SwingVantage's pose analysis. The system looks for pelvis position change between setup and impact — a reliable proxy for the hip-translation pattern. Findings are labeled by confidence level based on video quality and camera angle.
Frequently asked questions
