Estensione Anticipata

Also known as: alzarsi, perdere gli angoli, hump the dog (gergo di coaching)

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

To feel what proper hip rotation (not extension) looks like: set up to a ball, then without swinging, rotate your hips open to face the target while maintaining your spine angle. Your lead hip should be rotating behind you and around, not pushing toward the ball. That's the feeling to replicate in the swing.

Advanced note

The most reliable indicator of early extension on launch monitor data is a pattern of blocks to the right combined with low, shallow divots — the signature of an arm release forced by a body that moved toward the ball. On video, measure the distance between the fly of the lead hip pants and a reference line at address versus impact. Any net movement toward the ball (camera in face-on view) confirms early extension.

Example

Why it matters

Early extension creates inconsistency because it relies on precise timing of a compensating flip or block. Motion Lab's spine-angle read shows whether you stood up. A down-the-line clip paused at impact shows whether your hips moved toward the ball.

How it shows up on video

Down-the-line video (camera behind the golfer, along the target line) is the clearest view of early extension. Note where the golfer's backside sits at address, then pause at impact: if the hips have moved toward the ball, early extension is occurring. The golfer will appear to "stand up" from the spine angle they had at address. From face-on it is harder to see, because the hips move toward the camera.

Common mistakes

  • Believing you are "using the hips" correctly — hip extension toward the ball feels active and athletic. This is why so many golfers do not recognize it as a fault without video feedback.
  • Trying to "stay down" consciously at impact — this often results in the golfer over-correcting and hitting behind the ball. The fix is hip rotation, not staying lower.
  • Treating early extension as an arm fault — the arms are reacting to the hip movement, not causing the problem. Fixing arm position without addressing the hip pattern usually produces only temporary improvement.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab has no separate early-extension detector, and it does not see your hips move toward the ball. It estimates how much your spine angle changes across the swing, which shows standing up out of posture. It also reads your lead-knee flex. To check the hips, film down-the-line and note where your backside sits at address, then pause at impact.

Frequently asked questions
