The simplest way to close a reliably open face: strengthen your grip. Rotate both hands slightly away from the target at address until you can see two or three knuckles on your lead hand. This structural change directly controls where the face points at impact without requiring a swing adjustment.
Advanced players monitor face angle in relation to their specific swing path number (face-to-path). A face angle of −2° (slightly closed to target) is not a "closed face" if your path is +5°. This means the face is still 7° open relative to the path. This produces a fade. Always evaluate face angle and path together using the face-to-path number.

How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle (camera in front of the golfer, at chest height, facing down the target line), an open face at impact shows the leading edge of the club angled back toward the golfer rather than perpendicular to the target line. A distinctly visible "flip" through the impact zone — where the hands and clubhead race past each other — often corresponds to an uneven face angle. Common mistakes
- Conflating face angle with face-to-path. This means face angle describes where the face points relative to the target line. Face-to-path describes its relationship to the club's direction of travel. Both matter, but for different reasons.
- Ignoring address face angle — many golfers who complain of an open face at impact are actually setting up with an open face from the start. Check your address position before changing your swing.
- Trying to "rotate the face shut" through impact — this is a timing-dependent, unreliable fix. Structural fixes (grip, wrist position) control the face more reliably than impact-moment adjustments.
