Definition

Beginner tip

Think of the kinetic chain as a whip. This means the handle (your hips) moves first and creates the energy. This flows up the whip (your body) to the tip (the clubhead). Your job is to crack the whip by moving the handle first, not by yanking the tip.

Advanced note

Use radar-monitored speed training to test your kinetic chain efficiency. This means swing at 50% effort with a focus on hip-first sequencing, then measure clubhead speed. If your 50%-effort speed is more than 75% of your full-effort speed, your chain is efficient and you need more raw power. If the gap is larger, sequencing is the limiting factor.

How it shows up on video

The kinetic chain cannot be directly observed in a single video frame, but its quality is reflected in the sequencing visible in slow-motion footage. From a face-on camera angle, look for the hips rotating before the shoulders in the downswing (correct chain order) versus the shoulders and hips rotating at the same time (broken chain). From a down-the-line angle, watch the shaft. This means a well-functioning chain produces a shaft that shallows in transition and delivers from inside-out. A broken chain (upper body firing first) produces an over-the-top shaft path that loops outside the backswing plane.

Common mistakes

  • Firing everything at once ("muscling" the shot). This means trying to hit harder by tensing all muscles at the same time breaks the sequential nature of the chain. Paradoxically, consciously relaxing the upper body while letting the lower body lead produces more club speed.
  • Skipping the lower body initiation — starting the downswing with the hands or arms bypasses the two most powerful links (hips and torso). Even a small club speed gain from arm effort is sharply outweighed by the speed available from proper hip-to-torso sequencing.
  • Compensating for poor sequencing with grip strength. This means squeezing the grip to control the club is a sign that the kinetic chain is delivering energy at the wrong time. A proper chain produces speed that the hands manage, not create.
  • Treating the kinetic chain as a technique problem rather than also a physical one. This means hip mobility, core power, and forearm strength all directly influence chain efficiency. Physical training and technical training are equally necessary for optimizing the chain.
