Also known as: 上半身旋转, 胸椎旋转
To check your shoulder turn depth, make a backswing and try to see the target out of your peripheral vision from under your chin. This means if you can glimpse the target, your shoulders have turned sufficiently for your lead shoulder to have come across your chin. If you cannot, your turn is likely short.
Develop thoracic rotation mobility with the seated rotation stretch. This means sit on the edge of a chair with crossed arms, and rotate your upper body as far as possible. At the same time, keeping your hips still. Hold for 2 seconds, return, and repeat 10 times each direction, three times per day. This directly addresses the physical limitation that constrains shoulder turn for most golfers over 40.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, shoulder turn is directly visible at the top of the backswing as the lead shoulder appearing near or at the chin, the back visible to the target (for a full turn). The shoulder line appearing about perpendicular to the target line. Insufficient turn shows the shoulders still about parallel to the target line at the top. From a down-the-line angle, the tilting quality of the shoulder turn is visible. This means the lead shoulder moving down and toward the ball, the trail shoulder moving up and back. This means versus a flat, horizontal shoulder turn that does not match the spine angle.
Common mistakes
- Confusing arm swing with shoulder turn. This means lifting the arms without turning the shoulders produces the appearance of a full backswing but none of the trunk coil. A true shoulder turn involves the upper body rotating, not just the arms rising.
- Tilting instead of turning — some golfers "tilt" the spine toward the trail side without rotating the shoulders. This creates a reverse pivot appearance and does not load the trunk musculature for the downswing.
- Forcing shoulder turn against hip restriction — trying to turn the shoulders further than hip mobility and flexibility allow causes compensations (standing up, losing spine angle). Match the shoulder turn to available mobility rather than forcing it.
- Not monitoring thoracic mobility separately from swing mechanics — tight thoracic rotation is a physical limitation, not a technique problem. No amount of swing coaching will produce a full shoulder turn if the thoracic spine physically cannot rotate. Physical therapy or mobility work may be the correct first step.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage estimates shoulder turn depth from face-on and down-the-line video using pose estimation to track shoulder line orientation at the top of the backswing. The system can identify insufficient turn (shoulders remaining parallel or near-parallel to the target line at the top) and flat turn (shoulders rotating horizontally without the correct spine-angle tilt). Observations are confidence-labeled based on video quality.
