第五球模式

第五球模式指的是发球组合对这一回合第五球的计划性回应——通常根据第四球回球的结果，选择放小球或抽击。
匹克球的回合遵循奇偶球逻辑：发球组合打第1、3、5球；接球组合打第2、4球。如果第三球放小球成功、第四球是一记有控制的轻吊球，发球组合会用第五球来安顿进入轻吊比赛，或进攻一记顶起球。如果第三球是抽击、第四球是防守性格挡，第五球可能就是终于让发球组合得以推进的放小球。提前规划到第五球，能把回合打法从被动反应转变为有计划的执行。
第五球模式是一个把被动反应型球员与有计划型球员区分开来的决策点。在第三球之后就已经在思考第四球回应将需要什么的球员，打的是三球序列，而不是一球一球地打。这种前瞻性思维会带来击球预备——球拍会预先为可能的第五球做好准备，而不是在第四球到达后手忙脚乱地做出反应。
高水平的双打组合会根据不同的第四球回应，建立起一套第五球模式库。如果第四球是一记强力格挡，第五球就是一记有控制的放小球。如果第四球是一记轻柔的轻吊球，第五球就是一次积极的滚旋截击。如果第四球是一记高高的顶起球，第五球就是打向空当角落的扑杀。这些针对第四球类型的脚本化回应，经过反复训练直到变得自动化，把第五球的选择从压力下的决策转变为经过排练的执行。
After hitting the third shot, ask yourself one question: did it drop into the kitchen or sit up? The answer tells you whether to attack or reset on the fifth shot.
Drill fifth-shot patterns explicitly. This means have a partner feed alternating fourth shots (block versus soft dink) and practice selecting the correct fifth-shot type on its own based on what arrives.

Common mistakes

- Attempting to attack on the fifth shot when the fourth was a controlled dink that produced no attackable ball
- Using the same fifth-shot pattern regardless of what the fourth shot produced, ignoring the tactical information it conveyed
- Focusing so much on the third shot that the fifth shot preparation is delayed until the fourth shot has already arrived
