Develop a reliable standard rise ball first. The backdoor variant requires the same backspin mechanics but a release angle pointed a few inches outside the plate.
Deploy the backdoor rise in 0-0 or 1-0 counts when hitters are taking pitches, exploiting their patience by making them look off a pitch that will back-door the outer edge for a called strike.
Example
How it shows up on video
From the hitter's perspective the ball will start outside the plate edge and slowly drift back toward it rather than moving in a straight rising line through the zone. The hitter will often begin pulling their head out — reading the pitch as a ball — then freeze when the umpire calls the strike. In side-view footage you can see the ball's path curling back over the corner rather than cutting straight across.
Common mistakes
- Over-correcting the release angle so the ball starts too far outside and never returns to the zone
- Using it on 2-0 or 3-1 counts when hitters are aggressive and will chase any pitch near the zone
- Failing to set it up with a rise ball through the zone so hitters have no frame of reference for the backdoor variant
- Hitters failing to identify the gradual curve back and laying off a borderline pitch that catches the outside corner
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab maps ball trajectory angle relative to the strike zone boundary to confirm the backdoor path and measure how far off the edge the release must start for the pitch to return to the corner.
Frequently asked questions
