This means a situationally aware hitter will show a compact, downward-angle swing with a runner on third and one out but a full power swing with nobody on and a clear count. Chart ball-in-play direction by situation: right-side grounders and deep fly balls on productive-out situations, pulls and gaps on open-swing situations. A hitter who swings identically in every situation regardless of context will show a flat outcome distribution without the situational adjustment peaks that characterize disciplined situational hitters.
Common mistakes
- Defaulting to the same full swing in every at-bat regardless of the game situation, missing productive out opportunities by trying to drive the ball when a ground ball to the right side was all that was needed
- Becoming. As a result, focused on situational execution that zone discipline collapses. This means expanding the zone to swing at balls. This is because "the runner needs to score" and producing strikeouts or weak contact
- Not communicating with the third-base coach on a sacrifice fly opportunity, swinging for the gap rather than lifting a ball deep enough to score the runner
- Failing to adjust between plate appearances in the same game. This means a situational approach in the third inning should be updated based on what the pitcher has shown in subsequent innings
