Definition

压缩等级衡量的是把一颗垒球压缩四分之一英寸所需要的力,单位为磅。压缩值越高,球就越硬,离开球棒后反弹越快——通常在扎实接触时也会飞得更远。

Beginner tip

Before any tournament, confirm the sanctioned ball specification for that association. COR and compression together determine the performance envelope. This means knowing what ball will be used lets you calibrate expectations for distance and exit velocity on the day.

Advanced note

If you train with one compression and compete with another, note the exit velocity difference on squared-up balls during warm-up. This calibrates your mental model of what "well struck" looks like for that specific ball, preventing unnecessary mechanical adjustments during play.

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Compression is not directly observable from video. But its effects are. This means exit velocity on well-struck balls will be noticeably lower with higher-compression (harder) balls if bat speed is insufficient to overcome the rebound reduction at lower bat speeds. Mismatches show up as drives that look squared up but fall short.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming all "game balls" are equivalent across leagues — compression specifications vary widely between recreational and sanctioned competitive play.
  • Using a ball from another association's sanctioned list without checking whether that list is accepted by the current league.
  • Confusing compression with COR. This means compression is how hard the ball is (how much force to deform it). COR is how much energy it returns (rebound ratio). Both matter and both are regulated.
  • Attributing poor distance to the bat when the ball is actually outside the hitter's optimal compression range for their bat speed.
