Definition

Beginner tip

Focus on the peak of the arc — if the ball rises above 10 feet or doesn't drop steeply enough, take the pitch. Only swing when the arc and drop feel ideal.

Advanced note

Track how many runs your league averages per walk versus per hit. In many slow-pitch leagues, plate discipline that draws walks is as valuable as base hits — don't give at-bats away on bad pitches.

Example

How it shows up on video

Plate discipline in slow-pitch is visible as a batter taking clear balls (too high, too flat, outside the strike zone) without swinging, versus offering at marginal pitches. Video shows the batter's recognition and decision-making — disciplined hitters wait for the arc to peak and drop into the strike zone before committing to swing.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging at a pitch that's too flat (illegal delivery) out of eagerness, giving the pitcher a free out
  • Taking a called strike on a pitch that dropped perfectly into the zone due to hesitation
  • Not tracking the arc height — a pitch that looks hittable off the release but drops too high or too low becomes a bad swing
  • Becoming impatient after seeing one good pitch missed, leading to chasing subsequent pitches outside the zone
