小球

小球是一记轻柔击出的底线球或截击球，目标是刚好越过球网、几乎没有向前弹跳，把站位靠后的对手吸引上前，靠手感赢下这分。
小球是一种利用对手站位靠后的变速战术。关键的技术要求是隐蔽性——挥拍动作在最后一刻之前应该看起来和普通底线球一样——以及一个切削或带下旋的动作，消除球向前的动量。一记执行得当的小球会落在发球区内，保持低弹跳，并朝边线方向弹出。它在红土场上最为有效，因为较慢的场地速度给对手留下的恢复时间更少，对那些站在底线很远后方的对手同样有效。常见的失误包括暴露意图(过早放慢挥拍)、打网，或打出一记弹得太高、飞进场内太深的球。
一记好的小球，其机制依赖于打开拍面、向下并横切球的后部，产生能够遏制向前动量的后旋。接触应该在身体前方相当远的位置——与常规底线球相同的接触区域——挥拍应该在触球过程中减速，而不是加速，这与网球中其他任何一击都恰恰相反。这种贯穿完整准备动作的减速，正是隐蔽性的来源:对手读到的是正常的挥拍启动，接到的却是一记在网前附近就没了力量的球。
小球与深底线打法结合使用时最为危险。一名持续把球打到接近底线的球员，会自然地让对手为处理深球而后退——而那种后场站位，正是小球需要利用的最大场地距离。在建立起深度优势之前就使用小球，会让警觉的对手能够从一个不那么被动的位置迅速冲上前。“小球+挑高球”的组合(用小球把对手吸引上前，随后用一记挑高球越过他们的头顶)，是休闲和职业网球中同样具有决定性的两击战术组合之一。
