小球

小球是一记轻柔击出的底线球或截击球，目标是刚好越过球网、几乎没有向前弹跳，把站位靠后的对手吸引上前，靠手感赢下这分。
小球是一种利用对手站位靠后的变速战术。关键的技术要求是隐蔽性——挥拍动作在最后一刻之前应该看起来和普通底线球一样——以及一个切削或带下旋的动作，消除球向前的动量。一记执行得当的小球会落在发球区内，保持低弹跳，并朝边线方向弹出。它在红土场上最为有效，因为较慢的场地速度给对手留下的恢复时间更少，对那些站在底线很远后方的对手同样有效。常见的失误包括暴露意图(过早放慢挥拍)、打网，或打出一记弹得太高、飞进场内太深的球。
一记好的小球，其机制依赖于打开拍面、向下并横切球的后部，产生能够遏制向前动量的后旋。接触应该在身体前方相当远的位置——与常规底线球相同的接触区域——挥拍应该在触球过程中减速，而不是加速，这与网球中其他任何一击都恰恰相反。这种贯穿完整准备动作的减速，正是隐蔽性的来源:对手读到的是正常的挥拍启动，接到的却是一记在网前附近就没了力量的球。
小球与深底线打法结合使用时最为危险。一名持续把球打到接近底线的球员，会自然地让对手为处理深球而后退——而那种后场站位，正是小球需要利用的最大场地距离。在建立起深度优势之前就使用小球，会让警觉的对手能够从一个不那么被动的位置迅速冲上前。“小球+挑高球”的组合(用小球把对手吸引上前，随后用一记挑高球越过他们的头顶)，是休闲和职业网球中同样具有决定性的两击战术组合之一。
Tips by skill level
Practice the drop shot from inside the baseline first — the shorter distance to the net makes the geometry more forgiving while you develop the touch.
Master the drop shot off the backhand slice motion so the set-up is completely indistinguishable from a regular slice backhand until the last fraction of a second.

Why it matters
Drop shots break rhythm and open the court for a follow-up lob or pass. Motion Lab does not track the ball, so check where your drop shots land on video or on court.
How it shows up on video
A good drop shot mirrors a groundstroke set-up until the last moment. On video, pause at contact to check for a sudden racquet-face opening and an underspin motion through the ball. Visible errors include slowing the entire swing too early (easy to read), excessive wrist roll that produces sidespin instead of backspin, or a high contact point that results in a ball landing too deep in the service box.
Common mistakes
- Slowing the entire backswing early, telegraphing the drop shot to the opponent before contact
- Opening the racquet face too abruptly, producing a shot that floats mid-court instead of dying near the net
- Hitting the drop shot when positioned behind the baseline, giving the opponent too much time to chase it down
- Applying sidespin instead of backspin, causing the ball to bounce sideways into the doubles alley rather than dying short
