Schlägerleistungsfaktor (BPF)
Also known as: Bat Performance Factor
BPF is calculated by comparing the ball's rebound speed off the bat barrel to its rebound speed off a completely rigid surface. Both are measured at the same impact speed. A bat with a BPF of 1.20 sends the ball back 20% faster than a rigid wall would at the same impact speed. That extra energy comes from the barrel's elastic deformation at impact (the "trampoline effect"). The barrel compresses slightly under force and springs back, adding velocity to the departing ball. The key insight is that BPF captures performance the bat adds on top of what pure bat speed provides. It is the equipment's contribution, not the hitter's.
Associations cap BPF to keep games safe and competitive. USSSA caps its slow-pitch bats at 1.20 BPF. USA Softball does not use BPF; it certifies bats against a batted-ball speed limit of about 98 mph. A bat that exceeds the legal limit is not merely a performance advantage. It is grounds for forfeit of games in which it was used. Some associations maintain banned bat lists, updated seasonally as manufacturers push the limits. BPF certification is usually stamped on the bat rather than tested at the park. So knowing your association's approved-bat list is the only reliable way to confirm legality.
BPF and COR are sometimes confused. COR describes the ball's elasticity; BPF describes the bat barrel's elasticity. Both are regulated because together they determine total energy transfer at contact. A high-BPF bat paired with a high-COR ball produces maximum exit velocity — which is precisely the combination associations are designed to cap. In practice, a hitter using a legal 1.20 BPF bat with a sanctioned ball is already near the performance ceiling the equipment rules allow. The remaining variable is swing mechanics.
Tips by skill level
Before buying a bat, look up your association's approved bat list online and check that the specific model and year are approved. Bat stamps can be confusing — the only authoritative source is the association's own list.
If you play in multiple associations with different BPF limits, keep bats organized by division. A bat legal for USSSA open-division may not be legal for USA Softball co-ed — having separate bags for different league equipment prevents inadvertent violations.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
BPF itself is not directly observable, but its effects show in exit velocity relative to bat speed. A legally-hot bat hit at 60 mph bat speed will outperform a standard bat at the same speed by several mph of exit velocity. Comparing exit velocity across bats at known swing speeds is the practical way to feel the BPF difference.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a bat's BPF stamp is current. Some associations have updated legal lists and grandfathered bats may no longer be sanctioned even if the stamp reads 1.20.
- Confusing BPF with end-load or balance — BPF is an energy-return measurement, not a weight distribution description. A balanced bat can have high BPF; an end-loaded bat can have low BPF.
- Buying "hot" bats marketed as above-limit without checking current association approval — bats marketed as exceeding 1.20 BPF may be legal in some open divisions but illegal in others.
- Using a bat from a mixed equipment retailer without verifying it appears on the current approved list for your specific association.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not measure exit velocity, and its bat-speed figure is only a rough estimate. So it cannot tell how much of a hit came from the bat's BPF.
Frequently asked questions
Does a higher BPF bat always hit the ball farther?
Yes, assuming equal bat speed and solid contact — more BPF means more energy returned to the ball, which translates directly to exit velocity and distance. The practical ceiling is set by the association's legal limit, which is 1.20 BPF for USSSA bats.
How do I know if my bat is BPF 1.20 or higher?
The BPF rating is usually stamped on the bat. But that stamp reflects the bat's rating when certified. Some bats "break in" and become hotter over time. The only way to know a bat's current performance is through an association-certified laboratory test. The stamp is a starting point, not a promise.
