Also known as: arm action, throwing motion

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice the "reach and pull" arm motion. This means reach your throwing hand up and back as far as you can in the wind-up, then pull it down through a full arc rather than pushing the ball forward. This means this one cue addresses the most common short-arm and push-throw faults at the same time.

Advanced note

Use slow-motion video from the 3/4 rear angle to track whether your elbow stays above your shoulder through the pull-down phase. This is the position that is most difficult to self-assess in real time and the most mechanically significant checkpoint for velocity and accuracy.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, throwing mechanics are evaluated by tracking elbow position through the arm circle, release height, and arm path consistency across multiple throw reps. Common errors include the elbow dropping below the shoulder during the pull-down phase (producing sidearm throws with horizontal accuracy problems), the arm cutting short on the back-circle (short-arming that reduces pull-down arc length and velocity). The stride foot landing pointed toward first or third base rather than the throwing target (misaligning the body and forcing compensation from the arm).

Common mistakes

  • Short-arming the pull-down by collapsing the elbow rather than extending it through the full arc. This reduces the lever length available for velocity generation and increasing elbow stress in the deceleration phase
  • Striding at an angle to the throwing target rather than directly at it. This forces the arm to compensate for the body misalignment and produces throws that tail arm-side or glove-side unpredictably
  • Rushing the transfer and throw under pressure by skipping the grip-establishment step. This produces low-grip throws that sail unpredictably. This is because the ball is not on the fingertips at release
  • Using an arm action that is appropriate for one position or throw distance on throws that require a different tempo. This means a long outfield wind-up on a short infield flip, or a compact catcher stroke on a long outfield throw

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage tracks the three-dimensional arm path from the back-circle through release, measuring elbow height at peak arm elevation, arm arc length on the pull-down, and release point consistency across reps. Short-arm patterns appear as a compressed arc length on the pull-down phase; elbow-drop errors appear as elbow height falling below the shoulder line before release.
