Kontrol sa Layo
Also known as: speed control, pace
Build your personal "distance chart" by hitting 10 shots with each club on a calm day and using a GPS app or marked range to record the average carry. This means write these numbers down and keep them in your bag. Knowing your real distances (not your best shots) transforms club selection from guessing to informed decision-making.
Develop a "three-level pitch system" for partial shots. This means select your primary short-game club (say, 54° wedge) and hit 10 shots at each of three backswing lengths (7 o'clock, 9 o'clock, 11 o'clock position). Record the average carry for each. Now you have three calibrated short-game distances from one club. This means and for any shot within that range, you know exactly which backswing length to use rather than guessing.
Example
How it shows up on video
Distance control itself is not observable in video from a swing mechanics perspective. But the conditions that produce consistent distance control are. This means consistent shaft lean at impact (which determines dynamic loft), consistent swing length ratios (backswing to follow-through), and consistent ball contact quality (center-face versus toe or heel). From face-on video, these mechanical consistency indicators provide insight into a golfer's distance control potential. On the range, comparing multiple shots of the intended length from the same distance provides a direct assessment of distance control consistency.
Common mistakes
- Using only direction to assess practice results on the range. This means looking only at where shots finish left/right ignores whether they finished at the right distance. Hit specific distance targets on the range and track how reliably you reach them.
- Not knowing your actual carry distances for each club — many golfers estimate their club distances based on best-case range hits. Actual carry distances (measured with a launch monitor or GPS tracking) are typically 5–15% shorter than perceived distances and are the numbers you should base club selection on.
- Playing the same full shot regardless of conditions — temperature, altitude, and wind all by a lot affect distance. A 7-iron that carries 150 yards in normal conditions may carry 140 in cold weather and 160 at altitude. Building a distance adjustment system for conditions is essential for consistent scoring.
- Neglecting distance control in short game practice — most short game practice time goes to contact quality (chip technique) and not enough to distance calibration. Deliberately practicing distance (land it in a 3-foot circle at different distances) produces more scoring benefit than pure technique drilling.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can assess distance control contributors from video by analyzing shaft lean consistency at impact (affecting dynamic loft and ball speed), backswing length consistency (affecting short game distance), and contact quality indicators. These mechanical contributors to distance control are visible from face-on and down-the-line footage and are confidence-labeled based on video quality.
