Pitching
Build your pitching distances using a simple three-length system: a half-swing (7 o'clock backswing), a three-quarter swing (9 o'clock), and an almost-full swing (11 o'clock). Hit 5 balls at each length and pace off the average carry distance for each. This means these three distances become your pitching reference points for the course.
Film your pitch shots from down-the-line and measure the backswing and follow-through arm angles. This means the ratio of follow-through to backswing length should be consistent across different distance pitches (about 1:1 or 1.2:1). If the ratio changes by a lot for longer versus shorter pitches, you are either decelerating on short pitches or losing control on longer ones. This means both reveal inconsistencies in tempo and acceleration that more deliberate practice can correct.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, proper pitching shows the hands ahead of the ball at impact (forward shaft lean), a descending angle of attack. A follow-through that is proportional to the backswing length. An abbreviated follow-through for a given backswing length indicates deceleration. From a down-the-line angle, the swing plane should be on the correct inside path, with the body rotating through the shot rather than hanging back. Deceleration — the most common pitching fault — is visible as the follow-through being by a lot shorter than the backswing.
Common mistakes
- Making too long a backswing and decelerating through impact — the most common pitching fault. The correct approach is a shorter backswing with full acceleration through. A 50-yard pitch with a 9 o'clock backswing accelerated through is more reliable than a 11 o'clock backswing decelerated to reach the same distance.
- Scooping instead of compressing. This means trying to help the ball up with a pitching wedge produces the same thin/fat pattern as with irons but from short range. The loft handles the height; the golfer's job is to compress the ball with a descending blow.
- Using the same setup for all pitch distances — setup adjustments (ball position, weight distribution) should vary with shot type and distance. A greenside pitch and a 90-yard full pitch require different setup elements even though both use a pitching wedge.
- Neglecting pitch practice. This is because it "feels less important" than full shots. This means tour statistics reliably show that pitching (50–100 yards) represents a significant opportunity for scoring improvement for recreational golfers who rarely practice this range.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage evaluates pitching from video by observing shaft lean at impact, the proportionality of backswing-to-followthrough (to detect deceleration), descending angle of attack, and body rotation through the shot. Face-on video provides the clearest impact-zone analysis, while down-the-line video adds context about swing path and body position. Confidence labels reflect video quality and the visibility of impact-zone traits.
