Definition

Ang deceleration ay kapag bumagal ang club sa impact zone sa halip na mag-accelerate lampas sa bola — karaniwang sanhi ng mishit sa chip, pitch, at bunker shot.

Ang deceleration sa impact sa golf ay tumutukoy sa gawaing binabawasan ang swing speed sa impact zone — hindi sinasadya o sinasadyang binabagal ang club habang papalapit o dumadaan ito sa bola sa halip na mag-accelerate sa pagdaan sa impact. Beginner tip

For pitch and chip shots, use the "thump and run" drill. This means make your backswing and then commit to swinging through. As a result, your follow-through is at least as long as your backswing. This means if your follow-through is shorter than your backswing, you decelerated. Training a consistent backswing-to-throughswing ratio eliminates the primary cause of deceleration.

Advanced note

Use a speed measuring device (swing radar or launch monitor that captures club speed at impact) and compare your club speed at impact on committed swings versus shots where you were trying to be precise or careful. If your precision shots show a 10%+ reduction in club speed at impact compared to your committed swings, you have a meaningful deceleration pattern under performance conditions that requires routine-based commitment training to overcome.

How it shows up on video

Deceleration through impact is visible in slow-motion video as the clubhead slowing or stopping after contact rather than maintaining or increasing speed. In real-time, it manifests as a "flinching" or "jabbing" motion where the swing appears to halt through the impact zone rather than sweeping through. From a face-on angle, deceleration in the short game often shows as a large backswing followed by a very abbreviated follow-through. This means the arms stopping or collapsing immediately after the ball rather than continuing through to a full finish.

Common mistakes

  • Using a large backswing to "give yourself room to decelerate" — making a bigger backswing with the intention of slowing down before impact guarantees deceleration. The correct approach is a smaller backswing with full commitment to accelerating through.
  • Confusing deceleration with controlled distance — controlling distance does not require decelerating. Distance control comes from calibrated backswing length and through-swing speed, not from reducing speed before impact. Consistent speed through impact at varying backswing lengths is far more reliable.
  • Decelerating out of courtesy or caution without realizing it. This means many golfers do not know they are decelerating. This is because the "flinch" at impact happens at a subconscious level. Video review or impact quality data (ball speed versus clubhead speed) can reveal deceleration that the golfer cannot feel.
  • Trying to decelerate on full shots to produce higher ball flights. This means a slower swing does not produce the higher launch angle or more spin that a golfer might hope for. It produces weaker shots with worse trajectory. Club selection and setup changes are the correct tools for adjusting trajectory.
