Short Game

Definition

Beginner tip

For the fastest short game improvement, spend 30 minutes per week on nothing but 10-foot chip shots to a specific target. This means choose a hole 20 feet away, chip 20 balls to it, count how many finish within 3 feet. Track your score each session — measurable progress to a specific target produces faster skill development than undirected hitting.

Advanced note

Build a personal "short game inventory" by tracking your up-and-down percentage from 5 different distances (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 yards) over 10 rounds and identify your weakest distance. Focused practice at your specific weak distance produces targeted improvement rather than general short game work that may improve what you are already doing well.

Example

How it shows up on video

Short game quality is most visible in the results — where the ball lands, how it rolls, and how close it finishes to the hole. From face-on video, the mechanical indicators of good short game execution are. This means shaft lean at impact, minimal wrist action in chip and pitch strokes, consistent body rotation proportion to swing length, and appropriate follow-through acceleration. Deceleration (follow-through shorter than backswing) is the most common visible fault in short game video analysis.

Common mistakes

  • Spending 80%+ of practice time on the driving range and minimal time on short game. This means tour statistics confirm that 60–70% of strokes occur within 100 yards of the green. Practice allocation should roughly reflect where strokes are actually lost.
  • Treating all short game shots the same. This means a bump-and-run from 50 yards requires completely different technique and club selection than a high pitch over a bunker from the same distance. Developing multiple shot-type skills rather than one "go-to" short game approach is essential for course management.
  • Only practicing short game from perfect lies — course conditions include divots, rough, bare patches, wet grass, and slopes. Practicing from only perfect lies on a range mat builds skills that do not fully transfer to real course conditions.
  • Focusing only on technique without tracking results. This means the goal of short game practice is to land the ball in specific zones, not just to make a good-looking stroke. Always practice with a specific target and track how close you finish.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage evaluates short game technique from face-on video — in particular shaft lean, wrist action, body rotation, and follow-through proportionality. The system can identify the key fault patterns (scooping, deceleration, excessive body turn) and confidence-label each observation based on video quality. Multiple-shot analysis produces more reliable short game assessments than single-shot analysis.
