Paghilig ng Gulugod
Also known as: secondary tilt, side tilt
For a quick side tilt check at address. This means grip the club, set up to the ball, and look at your shoulders. This means your trail shoulder should be clearly lower than your lead shoulder by about the width of two fingers. If they appear level, your setup side tilt is insufficient and will make inside-out delivery more difficult.
Film your swing from the down-the-line angle and compare your spine angle at address to your spine angle at impact. This means draw a line through your spine in both frames. If the line is steeper (you are standing up) or shallower (you are tilting further forward) at impact than at address, your swing center has moved and you are hitting moving-target golf. This is inherently less consistent than maintaining your address spine angle through impact.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, side spine tilt is visible at address and impact as the difference in height between the trail and lead shoulders. This means the trail shoulder should be visibly lower. Insufficient side tilt shows the shoulders about level; a reverse tilt (lead shoulder lower) is a fault that promotes pulls and over-the-top paths. Forward tilt (hip hinge) is most clearly visible from a down-the-line angle, where the amount of forward bend from the hips toward the ball is directly observable. Loss of forward tilt during the swing (standing up) is also visible from down-the-line as the golfer straightening up through impact.
Common mistakes
- Tilting the entire spine toward the trail side (lateral bend rather than side tilt). This means leaning the whole body toward the trail side at address is different from tilting within the spine. The golf posture should maintain a centered head position while the right shoulder is lower due to grip and setup geometry.
- Losing forward tilt through impact (early extension). This means standing up or thrusting the hips toward the ball removes the forward spine tilt and changes the swing plane, typically producing thin shots, blocks, or flips as compensations.
- Confusing spine tilt with spine angle — the forward tilt (spine angle) and side tilt (secondary tilt) are two separate tilts in two separate planes. Fixing one does not on its own fix the other.
- Overemphasizing spine tilt without checking posture. This means excessive side tilt that curves the spine (C-posture) or excessive forward tilt that creates a hunched upper back reduces rotation range and creates injury risk. Tilt should be achieved with a straight spine, not a curved one.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage observes spine tilt from face-on video (side tilt, visible as shoulder height differential) and from down-the-line video (forward tilt, visible as the degree of hip hinge from address through impact). The system can flag insufficient side tilt at impact and loss of forward tilt (early extension) with confidence labels based on the clarity of the golfer's body position in available video.
