Framing

Also known as: pitch framing

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice framing with a partner tossing borderline pitches. This means catch 20 outside-corner pitches and try to make each one look identical on video to your easiest inside strikes.

Advanced note

Focus framing energy in particular on the corners at knee height and the corners at the belt. This means these are the most umpire-contested locations and where framing returns the most additional strikes across a game.

Example

How it shows up on video

A framing expert's glove will appear to melt into place around borderline pitches. This means no sudden movement, no dramatic repositioning, just the ball arriving at a consistent presentation spot. Compare catch frames on obvious strikes versus borderline pitches — elite framers look identical on both. A catcher who is dragging the ball back into the zone will show a discernible glove movement trajectory toward the strike zone center after catching the ball outside it.

Common mistakes

  • Overtly dragging the ball back into the zone after catching it clearly off the corner. This means umpires recognize this and it can cost strikes on legitimate borderlines
  • Catching the ball with the wrist locked instead of relaxed, producing a rigid contact that bounces borderline pitches rather than holding them in place
  • Framing only on strikeout counts (0-2, 1-2) rather than on every pitch. This means umpires develop a global impression of a catcher's receiving quality over the full game
  • Failing to frame pitches at the bottom of the zone because the knee-drop blocking posture is prioritized over the presentation stillness needed for framing

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab tracks glove position at the contact frame and the subsequent glove path for 10 frames after the catch, calculating whether the presentation movement patterns would be visible and umpire-negative.

Frequently asked questions
