Pagtatago ng Pitch

Also known as: tunneling

Definition

Beginner tip

Focus first on keeping your release point identical for your two primary pitches. This means release point consistency is the foundation of tunneling before worrying about trajectory angles.

Advanced note

Pair a rise ball and changeup intentionally as a tunneling duo. This means same release, same initial trajectory, with the rise climbing high and the changeup dropping low after the decision point. This means making both pitches sharply more effective.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a center-field camera angle you can see both pitches sharing the same visual cone for the first half of flight before they diverge near the decision point. This means if they look like the same pitch until 25 feet out, tunneling is working. Hitters will show identical swing initiation on both pitches, confirming they committed before seeing the break. Poor tunneling is visible as hitters reading and pulling off one pitch early while attacking the other confidently.

Common mistakes

  • Changing release point between pitch types, breaking the tunnel before the ball leaves the hand and giving the hitter early information
  • Pairing pitches that move in the same direction rather than opposite directions, reducing the exit-tunnel contrast that makes tunneling deceptive
  • Sacrificing location to maintain tunnel, producing pitches that break out of the zone rather than to a specific corner
  • Hitters not watching the release point carefully enough to notice when two pitches do not share the same early flight path, missing a pitch-tipping tell

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab maps the first-half flight path of multiple pitch types from the same release point, calculating how precisely pitches share the same visual tunnel before diverging.

Frequently asked questions
