Definition

Pitch tunneling is het principe om meerdere pitchtypes vroeg in de vlucht door dezelfde visuele 'tunnel' te releasen, zodat ze identiek lijken tot ze dicht bij de plaat divergeren, te laat voor de slagvrouw om aan te passen.

Een slagvrouw moet zich committeren aan swingen voordat de bal het halverwege-punt van zijn vlucht bereikt. Als een rise ball en een drop ball beide door dezelfde zone gaan een meter vóór de werpster, kan de slagvrouw ze niet onderscheiden tot na het beslissingspunt. Tunneling betekent het optimaliseren van releasepunt en trajectorie zodat de eerste helft van de vlucht identiek is; de breuk gebeurt in de dode zone van de besluitvorming. How it shows up on video

From a center-field camera angle you can see both pitches sharing the same visual cone for the first half of flight before they diverge near the decision point. This means if they look like the same pitch until 25 feet out, tunneling is working. Hitters will show identical swing initiation on both pitches, confirming they committed before seeing the break. Poor tunneling is visible as hitters reading and pulling off one pitch early while attacking the other confidently.
