Pagtulak ng Paa – Paghagis
Also known as: drive off the rubber, leg drive
Think of the push-off as throwing your hips at the plate first. This means if your hips arrive before your arm, your lower body is doing its job correctly.
Film your push-off from a side angle and measure your stride length reliably. Increasing stride length through better drive mechanics adds velocity without additional arm effort.
Example
How it shows up on video
Look for the hips leading the arm circle by a clear frame. This means the hip arrives at the plate-facing position before the arm releases, confirming proper kinetic chain sequencing. A pitcher with a weak push-off will show the arm and hips arriving nearly at the same time, indicating an arm-dominated delivery. The stride length will also be noticeably shorter on pitches with poor push-off drive.
Common mistakes
- Pushing off the side of the rubber rather than the front face, angling force laterally instead of toward the plate
- Initiating the arm circle before the leg drive begins, disconnecting the lower body power from the delivery
- Using a stiff knee on the push-off leg rather than loading it first, reducing the available drive force
- Focusing so much on not crow-hopping that the push-off becomes timid and the foot barely moves forward
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab measures hip linear velocity at push-off and tracks the kinetic chain sequencing from foot drive through hip rotation to confirm that leg power is successfully transferred into the pitch.
Frequently asked questions
