Lineup Strategy
Also known as: lineup construction, batting order strategy
Start with the simple principle. This means put players who get on base at the top, players who drive them in in the middle, and round out the bottom with remaining contributors.
In slow-pitch, the extra hitter (EH) spot in 10-player formats adds complexity. This means use it to slot an additional power bat or specialist rather than defaulting to it as a courtesy spot.
Example
How it shows up on video
Lineup strategy in slow-pitch is visible across multiple innings as the batting order reveals its design. This means fast contact hitters at the top creating baserunners, power bats in the middle driving them in, and additional contact hitters cycling back through. The lineup's logic becomes clearest in late-game situations where the right batter comes up at the right moment.
Common mistakes
- Writing a lineup based on seniority or politics rather than each player's true statistical tendencies and abilities
- Not accounting for how the lineup turns over — your bottom-of-the-order hitters will lead off an inning multiple times per game
- Failing to slot your best two-strike hitter in high-leverage positions where protecting the plate matters most
- Not adjusting the lineup based on which opposing defenders have weak arms or poor range that can be exploited
