Angle d’attaque (frappe) (attack angle)
Attack angle in batting is the vertical angle of the bat path through the hitting zone. A slightly upward attack angle matches the pitch plane for hard contact. Statcast treats 5 to 20 degrees at contact as the ideal range.
Attack angle is the mechanic behind launch angle. While launch angle describes what the ball does, attack angle describes what the bat does — and the bat's angle at contact shapes the ball's departure angle. A pitch arrives on a downward plane of about 6–10° below horizontal for a typical over-the-top delivery. A bat traveling at +5° to +12° upward meets that plane squarely and produces favorable launch angles for line drives and hard fly balls. The bat and pitch planes overlap for a generous window rather than crossing at a single point. This creates margin for timing errors without sacrificing contact quality.
A steep uppercut (well past +20°) is the most common attack-angle fault in amateur hitters who have been told to "swing for the fences." The barrel rises steeply through the zone. This creates a tiny contact window, and when it does make contact it catches the bottom quarter of the ball, imparting heavy backspin at a high launch angle — the recipe for pop-ups. A steep downward chop (negative attack angle) produces the opposite fault: grounders and swings over the top of the ball that misses entirely.
Attack angle is a cross-sport concept. In golf, attack angle describes whether the club is still descending or beginning to ascend at moment of impact. The optimal angle differs by club (negative for irons to compress the ball into the turf, positive for driver to launch the ball on an ascending arc). But the fundamental relationship between implement angle and ball departure is identical across both sports. Hitters who study golf biomechanics and golfers who study hitting often accelerate understanding of both disciplines because the underlying physics are shared.
Measuring attack angle precisely requires a high-speed camera or bat sensor with on-swing data. Visual proxies from regular video include whether the barrel is rising, level, or falling through the contact zone, and whether the hitter reliably catches the top, middle, or bottom of the ball. Pop-up patterns suggest too-steep an upswing; consistent top-spin grounders suggest a descending barrel.
Tips by skill level
Aim to match the plane of the incoming pitch. A pitch arrives on a slight downward angle. As a result, your barrel should travel on a slight upward angle. The two planes cross each other rather than running parallel. This produces a long, forgiving contact window.
Track your attack angle to different pitch heights. Attack angle should steepen slightly on pitches in the lower zone and flatten slightly on pitches up in the zone. The barrel needs to match a steeper-arriving low pitch and meet a flatter-arriving high pitch. Uniform attack angle regardless of pitch height is a sign the swing is not truly reading and matching the pitch plane.
Example
Un frappeur avec un angle d’attaque de +10° épouse le lancer entrant et frappe des flèches au lieu de rouler la balle vers l’arrêt-court.
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
From a side-view camera, watch the barrel through the hitting zone. An on-plane swing shows the barrel arriving at roughly the same height as the hands and traveling on a slight upward arc through contact. A steep uppercut shows the hands staying high while the barrel dips sharply before rising. A downward chop shows the barrel arriving above the ball path, catching the top of the ball. The barrel-to-ball relationship at contact is the clearest visual indicator of attack angle.
Common mistakes
- Swinging with a steep downward chop because a coach said to "hit down on the ball". That cue produces negative attack angles that mismatch a downward-plane pitch and create grounders.
- Manufacturing an extreme uppercut in pursuit of launch angle. A steep upswing narrows the contact window and often produces the opposite of the intended result: pop-ups and miss-rates increase together.
- Confusing attack angle with swing plane. Attack angle is a specific measurement at contact; swing plane describes the overall barrel arc through the entire swing. Both matter but address different parts of the swing.

Open Baseball in Motion LabFrequently asked questions
