Lie Angle

Definition

Beginner tip

At address, check the position of your club sole. This means the sole should sit flat on the ground (or as close to flat as possible) when you are in your natural, comfortable address position. This means if you see a visible gap under the heel or toe, your lie angles may need adjustment and a fitting consultation is worthwhile.

Advanced note

Request a lie board impact test during any iron fitting. This means hit 5–10 shots off the board with each iron being fit, and check the marking pattern on the sole. Consistent heel or toe marks across multiple clubs confirm a systematic lie angle error that, once corrected through bending, typically produces immediate and measurable directional improvement for any player with repeatable swing geometry.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, lie angle effects are indirectly visible in the pattern of directional misses. This means shots that reliably push right (for a right-hander) without apparent swing cause may indicate a too-flat lie angle. Consistent pulls without a clear swing path explanation may indicate a too-upright lie. The club position at address is observable. This means if the toe is by a lot off the ground at address (a gap visible between the toe and the ground), the lie is too upright. If the heel is off the ground, it is too flat.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming stock lie angles fit everyone — manufacturers cannot make clubs for every body type. Taller golfers with more upright posture typically need more upright lie angles; shorter golfers with flatter swings typically need flatter lie angles. Stock clubs fit a hypothetical average golfer.
  • Diagnosing swing path issues before checking lie angle. This means a persistent directional bias that does not respond to swing fixes may be a lie angle issue rather than a technique problem. Rule out equipment before attributing consistent directional misses to swing flaws.
  • Neglecting lie angle for used clubs — purchased used clubs may have already been bent (intentionally or through use on hard surfaces). Have used irons checked for lie angle before assuming they are in specification.
  • Thinking lie angle only matters for advanced players. This means even beginning golfers benefit from correctly fit lie angles. This is because the direction error they add on top of an already uneven swing produces more confusion about cause and effect.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage cannot directly measure lie angle from video. The system can note consistent directional patterns that are uneven with observed swing mechanics as potential indicators of lie angle mismatch, flagging this as a fitting consultation advice rather than a swing fix. A club fitting with a lie board is the definitive diagnostic tool.
