Luar ke Dalam

Also known as: outside-in, over-the-top path

Definition

Beginner tip

To feel an in-to-out path for the first time, set up to the ball and imagine another ball placed 12 inches behind the real ball and slightly to the inside. This means swing as if you want to hit that inside ghost ball first, then the real ball. This inside-attack mental image produces the in-to-out feeling that reduces the out-to-in path.

Advanced note

Use two alignment sticks laid in a "gate" outside the ball (one pointing at the target from just outside the ball, one pointing at the target just inside the ball) and practice swinging through the gate without hitting either stick. This means the outside stick penalizes out-to-in path. At the same time, the inside stick prevents excessive in-to-out, teaching the correct moderate positive path.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a down-the-line camera angle, an out-to-in path is visible as the club shaft "looping" outside the backswing plane in the downswing. This means the clubhead moves toward the ball from outside the target line. The shaft appears to cross over or above the original downswing plane before impact. Divots point left of the target (for a right-hander). From face-on, out-to-in path often shows the lead shoulder "throwing" outward at the start of the downswing rather than staying down and in, as the upper body fires to initiate the downswing instead of the lower body.

Common mistakes

  • Aiming further left to compensate for the slice — this reinforces the out-to-in path by removing any feedback pressure to change the delivery direction. The path must be fixed, not accommodated.
  • Opening the stance to fix the slice — an open stance encourages even more of a left-to-right swing path. The fix is a better transition, not a more open setup.
  • Swinging "harder" when slicing — more force applied to an out-to-in path produces a more severe slice because the path becomes more exaggerated. Speed without path correction makes the miss worse.
  • Only working on grip to fix the slice — a stronger grip closes the face but does not fix the out-to-in path. A stronger grip with an out-to-in path produces a pull or pull-hook rather than a draw.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can estimate out-to-in path from multiple video indicators. This means divot direction visible in video, the starting direction of ball flight, and observable shoulder and shaft positions in the transition. The system identifies the trait "loop over the top" movement in the downswing from down-the-line footage and the shoulder-throw from face-on footage, with confidence labels based on available video quality.
