Awalan Ayunan
Also known as: initial move, first move away
For a simple takeaway check, use the "y-shape" drill: at address, your two arms and the club shaft form a Y shape. In the takeaway, keep that Y shape intact for the first 12 inches. This means push the entire Y away from the ball without breaking any of the joints. You will naturally produce an on-plane, wide takeaway.
Film your takeaway from down-the-line and freeze frame at the halfway-back position (shaft parallel to ground). This means draw a line along the shaft. This means it should point at or just outside the target. If it points at your feet or behind you (too inside), focus on pushing the club head slightly away from your body in the early takeaway. If it points well left of target (across the line), focus on keeping the club closer to your body in the first foot.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a down-the-line camera angle, the takeaway at the halfway-back position should show the club shaft parallel to the target line and parallel to the ground, with the toe of the club pointing upward and the face at roughly 45° (matching the spine angle). Too far inside shows the club pointing right of the target line (laid off). Too far outside shows the club pointing left of the target line (crossing). From a face-on angle, a good takeaway shows the club head staying outside the hands for the first 12 inches before the wrists begin to hinge. This means a "wide" extension that maintains the triangle of the setup.
Common mistakes
- Taking the club too far inside in the takeaway. This means a "flat" or "around the body" takeaway puts the club on a plane that almost always requires compensation to recover in the downswing, and usually produces an excessively in-to-out path.
- Picking the club up steeply outside (lifting the arms without turning). This means an outside takeaway creates a steep backswing plane that is the most common precursor to an over-the-top downswing. The club must travel along the shoulder plane, not straight up.
- Rolling the forearms open in the first foot of the takeaway. This means an early, excessive forearm roll opens the face early in the backswing and requires a compensatory roll back through impact to produce a square face. This adds timing demands and uneven results.
- Over-thinking the takeaway — excessive conscious control of the takeaway produces tension and kills the rhythm that a good takeaway is meant to establish. The takeaway should feel like one connected movement, not a series of checkpoints.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage observes the takeaway from down-the-line video by analyzing shaft position at the halfway-back position. This means in particular, whether the shaft is on-plane (parallel to the target line) or off-plane in either direction. Face angle relative to the swing plane at this position is also observable in high-quality video. These observations are confidence-labeled based on camera positioning and video quality.
