Meleset Dua Arah

Definition

Beginner tip

To diagnose your two-way miss, count how many times in 20 shots you miss left versus right and how far each way. This means if it is 60/40 (mostly right with some left), the small left misses are likely overcorrections of your primary right miss. The fix is for the right miss only.

Advanced note

Use a launch monitor to capture 20+ consecutive shots and plot the club path and face angle distributions. This means the two-way miss with a systematic mechanical source will typically show a bimodal distribution (clustering around two different path or face values) rather than random scatter. Identifying which variable is bimodal tells you exactly where the uneven results lives in your swing.

Example

How it shows up on video

A two-way miss is characterized by uneven ball flight direction across multiple shots. This comes from a face-on camera setup, consecutive shots showing both left and right misses without a clear pattern. In video analysis, the body pattern that correlates with a two-way miss is often a variable path (the club crossing from different angles through the impact zone on different shots) or a variable release (the timing of the forearm rotation through impact changing shot to shot). Both are visible in slow-motion face-on and down-the-line footage.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to average out the two-way miss by finding a "middle" swing. This means a golfer who hits both left and right cannot find a swing between the two that produces the middle. The source of uneven results must be identified and corrected, not averaged.
  • Changing grip or alignment to fix the two-way miss without data. Without knowing which direction is more common and what variable is uneven, any change is a guess. Launch monitor data across 20+ shots is the minimum for reliable two-way miss diagnosis.
  • Treating the two-way miss as a mental problem — the two-way miss has a mechanical root cause (an uneven variable in the swing). Mental game work can help with managing the pattern, but it does not eliminate the mechanical source of variance.
  • Fixing the two-way miss with the same cue for every session. This means the two-way miss may arise from different sources on different days (fatigue affecting path, cold weather affecting grip, etc.). Identifying the day's specific pattern before trying to fix it produces faster improvement than applying the same solution every session.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can analyze the two-way miss pattern by comparing multiple shots' swing traits to identify which variables are uneven. This means in particular looking for sessions where club path or face angle indicators vary by a lot between left and right miss shots. Multiple-shot video analysis is more revealing than single-shot analysis for two-way miss diagnosis.
