Punch Volley
Also known as: block volley, firm volley
Keep your elbow out in front of your hip as you punch. This means if you can see your elbow in your peripheral vision, your positioning is correct.
Practice redirecting punch volleys to three zones — feet, body, and open court — from identical backswing positions so your shot selection is unreadable before contact.
Example
How it shows up on video
SwingVantage tracks elbow position relative to the hip at contact, flagging punch volleys where the elbow has drifted behind the body and caused the paddle face to open. Contact timing — whether the ball is met out in front or allowed behind the hip — is a primary quality indicator.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the elbow to drift behind the hip, causing the paddle face to open and the ball to pop up
- Using a backswing before the punch instead of a forward-only motion, slowing reaction in fast exchanges
- Punching back straight to the opponent rather than redirecting to the feet, body, or open court
- Gripping too tight on impact, causing the paddle to recoil and the ball to pop up rather than drive forward
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab monitors elbow height and arm extension angle at contact to confirm the compact, forward-facing punch technique. Wrist position through the stroke is cross-referenced against placement outcome to identify face-angle instability.
