Outside Pitch Approach
Also known as: hitting to the opposite field, going the other way
Practice outside pitch tee work with the tee set at the back corner of the plate and focus on letting your hands reach full extension naturally without forcing them toward the ball early.
Film your hip timing on outside versus inside pitches and measure the difference in frames before the hips fully open. This means a successful opposite-field hitter will show 3–5 more frames of hip restraint on outside pitches.
Example
Pitcher bekerja pemukul ke arah luar; alih-alih menarik dan ground out, ia tetap di belakang dan meline pitch ke arah lain untuk single dua-out.
How it shows up on video
A proper outside pitch approach shows the front hip staying closed longer than on an inside pitch. This means measurable as the hips facing the third-base dugout a frame longer before beginning rotation. Contact should occur deeper in the zone than an inside pitch, with the ball clearly behind the front hip at the moment of impact. A hitter pulling off an outside pitch will show the front shoulder flying open early and the barrel dragging through the zone from outside-in. This produces weak pull-side grounders.
Common mistakes
- Opening the front hip too early, pulling the barrel off the outside pitch plane and producing a roll-over grounder to the pull side
- Reaching for the outside pitch with extended arms before the hip allows the barrel to arrive naturally, producing glancing contact
- Assuming an outside pitch is a ball and taking it for a called strike because it started further from the body than expected
- Overstriding on an outside pitch and losing the balance needed to stay back and let the ball travel deep to contact
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab tracks hip rotation timing relative to pitch location and confirms that outside pitches produce a later, more restrained hip opening compared to inside pitches. This means the biomechanical key to opposite-field power.
Frequently asked questions
Bagaimana saya berlatih going the other way?
