Wrist Snap – Pitching

Also known as: snap, wrist flip

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice wrist snaps in isolation. This means hold the ball at hip height and fire only the wrist. This means to build the neuromuscular pattern before adding it to the full arm circle.

Advanced note

Film your release at 240fps and review the wrist snap direction for each pitch type side-by-side to confirm you are not inadvertently blending spin axes between pitches.

Example

How it shows up on video

The wrist snap is visible as a brief but distinct flick at the very bottom of the arm circle near the hip. This means a high-speed camera frame shows the hand driving through the ball in a downward or rotational arc depending on pitch type. Hitters can sometimes pick up the wrist direction pre-release, making consistent snap timing and direction critical for deception. The ball's seam rotation immediately after release confirms whether the snap produced the intended spin.

Common mistakes

  • Snapping the wrist too early in the arm circle — before the hand passes the hip — which bleeds spin before the ball is released
  • Using arm strength instead of wrist acceleration, producing a pushed delivery with reduced spin rate
  • Snapping downward for every pitch including the rise ball, inadvertently adding drop spin rather than backspin
  • Uneven snap timing across pitch types, creating recognizable tells that opposing hitters and coaches can decode

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab captures wrist angular velocity at the release frame and maps the snap direction to confirm the intended spin axis for each pitch type in the pitcher's repertoire.

Frequently asked questions
