Base Running

Also known as: baserunning, running the bases

Definition

Beginner tip

Always watch the ball and your third-base coach — they have the angle to see the whole play. Your job is to run hard and trust the signals you receive.

Advanced note

Study the opposing outfielders' arm strength before the game. As a result, you know during the game whether you can challenge them on close plays. This means one extra base per game compounds over a season.

Example

How it shows up on video

Base running in slow-pitch reveals itself on video as aggressive reading of fly balls and ground balls off the bat. Good base runners lean toward the next base before contact and take decisive secondary leads. Poor base runners are flat-footed and reactive, waiting to see where the ball goes before making decisions that need to be made earlier.

Common mistakes

  • Not reading the ball off the bat and breaking immediately — hesitation turns possible extra bases into holds
  • Running through a stop sign from the third-base coach on close plays. This results in outs at the plate on balls that score only with perfect slides
  • Failing to tag on fly balls in scoring position — slow-pitch outfield catches are almost always deep enough for a tag attempt
  • Standing up at second on balls in the gap when sliding would avoid a tag from a relay throw
